A Spiderman party where every guest arrived as somebody

At three, Maxim did not want a show about Spiderman. He wanted to meet him. So we kept the decor light and put the work into the garden — a giant web strung between the trees, a flag course across the lawn, and a basket of capes and felt masks by the door so that every child arrived as a hero. Spiderman came and never left, lifting them through the web one at a time, for two straight hours.

The brief

A third birthday at a villa in Ubud — thatched roofs, stepping stones set through the grass, jungle pressing in at the edges. Maxim wanted Spiderman, and at three that means one specific thing: he wants to meet him. Not watch a show about him.

What we built

We kept the decor light and put the work into the garden instead. A giant web strung between the trees for them to climb through, superhero flags pegged across the lawn as a course, and a basket of capes and felt masks by the door so that every guest arrived as somebody. Paper crowns for the ones who wanted both.

How the day went

Spiderman walked in and the three-year-olds attached themselves to him on the spot. He led them along the stepping stones, ran the course, and lifted them one at a time through the web — which, as far as they were concerned, was the entire party. They went through it, got stuck in it, and went round to do it again.

What the parents got

A very small boy who believed completely, for two straight hours. And a garden that was a garden again by the time the last guest left.

Decor, equipment, balloons and the party rubbish that comes with them — bagged and gone before we leave. We are not a cleaning company, so floors and dishes stay with your villa's housekeeping. But nothing of ours is left behind, and no mess of ours is left for you.
