The brief
A sixth birthday in a villa garden — big lawn, string lights already in the trees, jungle behind. Leonard plays Minecraft, and six is the age where a printed backdrop stops working: he knows exactly what a creeper is meant to look like, and he will tell you if you get it wrong.
What we built
So nothing was printed. The entire world was cut from board and hand-painted — a set the width of the lawn with <i>LEONARD</i> across the top in orange blocks, Steve mid-swing with a pickaxe, Alex, a wolf, a pig, a villager, diamond swords and axes flying out of the frame, grass blocks and trees stacked up the sides, and a standing <i>6</i> at the end. The cake table was dressed as a grass block, with balloons in green, brown, orange and blue piled at the base.
How the day went
It ran the way Minecraft actually runs: build, then destroy. The host stacked cardboard blocks into towers and the boys knocked them down, crossed the lawn stepping block to block, and then the water balloons came out and it turned into a proper battle across the garden. The cake was three tiers — checkerboard grass at the bottom, a creeper face, a TNT block on top — and three of them leaned in and bit it before anyone could stop them. Then the foam cannon started, and the fathers and mothers went in with the children.
What the parents got
A set built specifically for their son, standing in their own garden, that read as real to a six-year-old who checks. And the photograph everybody keeps from these parties: the adults covered in foam, laughing, in the middle of it.
