The brief
A ninth birthday at a villa in Ubud, running from afternoon into the night. At nine there is no character to hire and no theme they will admit to liking. What still works, and works completely, is being shown something they cannot explain.
What we built
Two shows and a long gap in between for eating and running around. Face painting to start — and at this age they choose it themselves, so it came out as red and black warpaint rather than butterflies. Then the lawn was set up for the science show, and the terrace was kept clear for after dark.
How the day went
The afternoon science show ran outdoors: clouds of white fog rolling across the grass at knee height with children running through it, and a frozen rose held up and shattered in mid-air — he was still holding a burger in the other hand when it went. Then dinner, and dark. The night show was pure light: a performer working with illuminated fans, drawing shapes in the air faster than the eye follows, in a garden with every other lamp turned off. The boys stood in a ring and did not speak.
What the parents got
The one thing a nine-year-old will actually talk about at school afterwards. And a party that filled the whole day and the evening rather than fizzling out at four o'clock.
