The brief
A fifth birthday at an open-air restaurant in Ubud — jungle on three sides, a timber deck, and no walls anywhere. Luna wanted Frozen, which in Bali is a contradiction in terms: the entire appeal of the theme is cold, and it was thirty degrees before anybody arrived.
What we built
A Frozen corner set against the restaurant's own timber: Anna and Olaf cut and painted at child height, a white picket fence, snowflakes, and a balloon garland in powder blue, lilac and pink. Tiaras for every guest. The cake came in white and blue, hung with pale blue spheres, on a table dressed with candles and winter florals.
How the day went
Elsa arrived and the room went quiet for a moment — five-year-olds take her extremely seriously. Glitter and face paint first, then a Frozen floor game unrolled down the deck, then the thing they had actually come for: the snow cannon. Real drifts of it, blown across a tropical restaurant floor, children running through it barefoot. A bubble show closed the afternoon.
What the parents got
A theme that has no business working in the tropics, working — and photographs of their daughter in a tiara, in the snow, in Ubud. The restaurant handled the food; we handled everything else.
