For the age where the word party has to mean something closer to a club, this format is built entirely out of light. The cannon went into the middle of a dark lawn at an Ubud hotel, with the whole area lit magenta, ultraviolet and cold blue so that every piece of foam catches colour on the way down. No arch, no name board, no theme. It ran until they were exhausted, and they posted the whole thing themselves.

The brief

An Ubud hotel, at night, for the age where the word <i>party</i> has to mean something closer to a club than to a birthday. Ten and up will not accept decor, characters or games. What they will accept is an atmosphere they can film.

What we built

Almost nothing physical — this format is built out of light. The foam cannon in the middle of a dark lawn, and the whole area lit in magenta, ultraviolet and cold blue so that every piece of foam catches colour on the way down. No balloon arch, no name board, no theme.

How the day went

Foam knee-deep within minutes, and the older ones going straight in — hands up in the light, foam in their hair, all of it in silhouette. It looks like a music video in the photographs, which at that age is exactly what it is for. It ran until they were exhausted rather than until the programme said stop.

What the parents got

An event their teenagers were not embarrassed by, and footage they posted themselves. That is the whole measure of success at this age.
