The brief
A third birthday at a villa on the Bukit — wide clipped lawn, frangipani trees, nothing but sky behind it. Kai's whole world at three was diggers, and the guest list was mostly toddlers, which changes everything: whatever you build has to be safe to climb on and interesting from knee height.
What we built
A construction site, in his colours. A charcoal board with cogs and a hazard sign reading <i>KAI IS TURNING 3 AND DIGGING IT!</i>, an <i>UNDER CONSTRUCTION</i> triangle, a hazard-striped panel, an excavator cut out and painted at child height, and a giant traffic cone standing on the grass. The balloon garland ran orange, yellow, grey and black with silver starbursts through it. The cake was plain white with real toy trucks and a crane parked on top of it and crumbled chocolate for soil.
How the day went
Gently, which is what three needs. A host sat down on the grass with them for ring toss over the cones — no queue, no rules to remember. A giant white bear walked in and was hugged rather than feared. Then the bubble show on the terrace: ordinary bubbles first, then the ones that burst into a puff of white, which the mothers ended up catching as much as the children did. At sunset the whole family bent over the cake together and blew the candles out as a group.
What the parents got
A set that photographs beautifully against an empty Bukit sky, and a party pitched precisely at three years old rather than at what looks good online. Nobody cried, and nobody had to be persuaded to join in.
